Spiel Essen 2026: The Five Games Everyone Was Talking About
Four days, 200,000 attendees, and over 1,800 new releases. We walked every hall so you don't have to — here are the games that defined this year's fair.
The Messe Essen halls were packed from Thursday morning onward, and by Saturday the aisles of Hall 3 were nearly impassable. This year's Spiel felt like a turning point: crowdfunding darlings shared floor space with century-old publishers, and the line between 'indie' and 'mainstream' has never been blurrier.
The clear buzz title was a mid-weight euro about rewilding post-industrial landscapes — its demo tables ran nonstop, and the publisher sold through its entire convention stock by Friday afternoon. Close behind: a cooperative legacy game from a first-time design duo that had attendees queuing before the doors opened.
Also of note: two major publishers announced digital companion apps that replace traditional rulebooks entirely, a move that drew both applause and audible groans depending on which booth you were standing in.
Our full hotness list, including the sleeper hit from the Korean pavilion that nobody saw coming, lands in next week's print edition.
